Why bother to clean your Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)? Well, it matters for 3 crucial reasons:

1. Driving legally

Firstly, to drive legally your vehicle must meet certain limits on emissions. These are tested on an MOT, but also in Low Emission Zones which are being introduced this year in several cities across the UK.

2. Driving economically

Running a vehicle with a dirty DPF will cost you more in fuel consumption. We would recommend as part of a planned service to a vehicle that DPF Cleaning is an essential element to maintain optimum economic performance. This is an inexpensive solution which gives you peace of mind the vehicle is legally compliant on emissions and could save you up to 20% on fuel consumption.

3. Driving for better health and environment

Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, the pollutants from diesel emission are bad for your health and the environment. Many studies have been done on emissions not least by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) who are part of the World Health Organisation. Their study showed an increased risk of lung and bladder cancer from the pollutants from diesel exhaust vehicles.

Diesel emissions contribute to the production of ground-level ozone which affects crops, trees and other vegetation. Also produced is acid rain, which affects soil, lakes and streams and enters the human food chain via water, produce, meat and fish.

Having your DPF cleaned regularly plays a small but vital part in addressing all these issues.

DPF cleaning

There are many cheap fluids readily available on the market that claim to clean a DPF. Yet without removing the DPF from the vehicle it cannot be visually inspected nor can before and after readings be taken. This is one reason why these fluids are more miss than hit. There is also a plethora of DPF cleaning machines that all claim to be the best but yet again results are hit and miss.

Excalibre Technologies have invested in the latest technology and are experts in diesel emissions and exhaust systems – we are at the forefront of DPF Cleaning for buses, coaches,  vans, LCV,  and HGVs such as trucks and lorries.

Example -making London drive cleaner

Thanks to our expert approach, Londoners can now breathe cleaner air with over 1,700 buses we have retrofitted to comply with emission limits. Several Fleet operators we work in partnership with of all kinds of trucks and lorries are running cleaner, legal and more efficient

How we clean a Euro VI Diesel Particulate Filter

This is just one method we employ to clean a DPF…

Step one

Upon receipt of a DPF it is first identified and then booked into our system. We conduct a visual inspection checking the inlet and outlet ends of the DPF for damage, soot bypass and exotherm. At this stage severely damaged DPF’s are easily identified and once the mode of failure is recorded the cleaning process does not need to be completed

Step two

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

We then perform an outlet Pin Test looking for possible obstructions which might indicate internal exotherm damage. We also look for any substrate surface cell damage or mounting mat deterioration. The filter is put onto the FSX flow bench to record flow resistance.

Step three

[siteorigin_widget class=”SiteOrigin_Widget_Image_Widget”][/siteorigin_widget]

Next the filter is then placed into our FSX DPF Cleaning Machine until no soot or ash can be seen exiting the inlet side. Excalibre Technologies have invested in FSX cleaning methods because they offer the most advanced technology for the best cleans. They are also used by all the major OEM`s and the cleaning process, testing and reporting is to the same standard

Step four

The Pin Test and The Flow Test are then repeated to see that the DPF is within the limits for that specific DPF. About 95% of DPF`s at this stage will pass. Those that don`t may require a thermal clean where they are placed in a kiln and heated to a specific temperature to burn off the remaining soot. Once again, the Pin Test and Flow Test are carried out to ensure all limits are met.

Step five

Once the DPF has passed we log all results onto our system for future reference and make arrangements to deliver it back to the customer.
